Abstract

Identity construction is a process every person goes through in life, with adolescence being one of the key moments in which someone starts acknowledging who they are and who they want to become. For this reason, YA literature portrays the identity construction process with great accuracy through different strategies, the most popular of those being the journey of the hero or heroine in a fantasy world; there are many examples of heroes who find themselves and their identity while fighting evil, such as Eragon, Harry Potter among others. This study focuses on the identity construction process of heroine Clary Fairchild from The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. The study was supported by Identity theory and Affect theory, more specifically how certain emotions such as hate, love, disgust, hope, happiness and anger towards the people in her life are key in the development of Clary’s identity as a heroine. Clary is seemingly a normal girl who finds her world turned upside down just as she was finding her footing, this triggers a destabilization in her perception of self and identity which leads to her affective identity construction as a heroine. In this new world Clary is guided in her actions by the emotions her adversaries and allies provoke in her and therefore her identity is shaped in accordance with those emotions, ultimately Clary finds herself and her identity through her emotional responses in her heroic journey.
